Thinking of buying a puppy? Nutmeg’s Story

The following was written by Nutmeg’s mom, Stephanie.

Thinking of buying a puppy? Let’s look at the actual cost of doing so.

Nutmeg spent 9 years in a puppy mill. She entered rescue with puncture wounds and lacerations all over her neck, meaning she likely had to fight other dogs for food. She came with open sores (meaning she sat in feces and urine), and a rotted mouth (as she was not given any medical attention). She came de-barked, meaning they most likely rammed a steel rod down her throat. She came with leg, hip, and paw abnormalities, as well as arthritis and slipped discs in her back from spending her life in a cramped wire cage. She came with ear infections, eye infections, mammary tumors and other tumors, and a severely infected uterus.

Nutmeg was actually in pretty good shape physically compared to the conditions some of the other puppy mill dogs are in when they’re rescued –if they’re ever rescued– but usually they just die in the puppy mills from a lack of medical care or are intentionally killed once they no longer produce puppies. Nutmeg has very severe emotional trauma, though, and it has been a very long road of teaching her how to be a dog and to overcome her overwhelming fear of humans.

That cute puppy isn’t worth what the parents of the puppy go through. Help end the puppy mill industry and adopt, don’t shop.
