Fernando is a fighter!

Fernando at his vet apptIt was not quite two weeks ago that Fernando was rushed to the hospital with pneumonia-like symptoms. Things were really touch-and-go that first night even as the best veterinary specialists cared for him and, quite honestly, they didn’t expect he would make it through the night. But Fernando is a fighter!

Yesterday Fernando had a follow-up visit with Dr. Sherrill (one of the specialists who cared for him during his stay) and she was very pleased with his progress. A new chest x-ray was taken; his airways are clear and his lungs appear back to normal.

The fact that Fernando is doing so well is a testament to the excellent veterinary care he received at the hospital. We cannot adequately express the depth of our gratitude to Dr. Bradley, Dr. Sherrill, and all of the amazing staff at VCA Veterinary Specialists of Northern Colorado.

What caused Fernando to become so ill? We don’t know for sure, but it is likely that Fernando had developed bacterial pneumonia, and though additional diagnostic procedures may have given us answers, they were invasive and even risky, so we chose to forgo them. There is also the chance that Fernando’s heart condition (pulmonary hypertension) had suddenly worsened or that there may have been a blood clot in his lungs, and we’ll know more about that in a couple weeks when he has an echo-cardiogram.

Fernando is currently being given the following drugs: Clavamox (antibiotic), Sildenafil (increases the blood flow in the arteries of the lungs), Gabapentin (for arthritis), and also Clopidogrel (blood thinner).

Fernando is back to his old self and so happy and loving, always wagging his tail and giving kisses. We’re so very grateful for all the prayers and positive thoughts that were sent his way … THANK YOU!
