What is American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards all about?

Harley - Hero Dog AwardsIt’s an ambitious effort to recognize extraordinary acts of heroism performed by… DOGS! This is the fifth year for the Hero Dog Awards. There were 171 dogs nominated in eight categories:

– Law Enforcement
– Arson
– Service Dogs
– Therapy Dogs
– Military Dogs
– Guide/Hearing Dogs
– Search & Rescue Dogs
– Emerging Hero Dogs (ordinary dogs doing extraordinary things)

More than 1 million votes were cast and 8 finalists were selected based 50% on votes and 50% on the decision of a panel of judges… and Harley won the Emerging Hero Dog category!

All 8 finalists will be flown to Los Angeles for a star-studded gala event (including many dog-loving celebrities) at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on September 19.  At this event the top “American Hero Dog” will be chosen. The broadcast of this event will be on Hallmark Channel the evening of October 30th.
