Harley’s Hero Spotlight – Meet Donna

Donna with Harley!

Why did you become a Harley’s Hero?
When I adopted my first puppy mill dog, Gomez, I knew nothing about puppy mills. His foster mom suggested I look up Harley on Facebook. So I did and I was shocked about everything I was learning about puppy mills. I knew I had to get involved and help. My husband and I have adopted 3 more puppy mill survivors since then. When I had the opportunity to start my own Harley’s Hero group, I was thrilled. Being able to educate the public about puppy mills was something I always wanted to do.

Which city/state are you working as a Harley’s Hero?
I am a team leader in Thornton, Colorado. We currently have 10 members and we continue to grow!

What difference do you feel you are making as a Harley’s Hero?
I think our group is making a big difference locally. We get so much support from our community. Many people are thrilled to see that we are protesting at pet stores which sell puppies from mills. I have also worked with a few school-age students who are wanting to teach their peers about puppy mills.

What motivates, inspires you in the fight against puppy mills?
My motivation is my dogs (puppy mill survivors); seeing them struggle everyday with fears. Especially when they are afraid to be picked up or snuggled after living with you for a few years. Often, people will come up to us and thank us for the work we are doing to end puppy mills. I want to fight harder, and provide education, when people tell me about their store bought dog that has been sick or has died.

Do you have future plans as a Harley’s Hero?
Yes, I do! Since I have a big Harley’s Heroes team I am looking into getting into another local Petco where we provide information and education about puppy mills, adoptions, and volunteer opportunities. We are hoping to be involved in more festivals this summer. We will continue protesting at pet stores and I will continue educating students that want to spread awareness about puppy mills.

What would you like everyone to know about puppy mills, pet stores and animal welfare laws in your state?
I personally think Colorado is lacking in the animal welfare department. I feel my city councilman is more interested in small businesses than animal welfare. I am working to change his mind.

Tell us about your pets!
I have 3 former puppy mill dogs. Tatiana came to us as a foster but after a year living with us, we decided to make her part of our pack. Destiny was also a foster but we knew after a week she wouldn’t be going anywhere. And then there’s Harley Jr. (Harley’s son) … We were asked if we wanted to foster him and of course we said, “Yes!” Actually, Bill told Dan and Rudi that first night that Jr belonged with us. I admire all of my dogs’ willingness to trust after what they have been through.

Can you offer words of advice to someone who is considering becoming a Harley’s Hero?
Just do it!! Being a Harley’s Hero is one of the most rewarding things you can do to help puppy mill dogs. You will definitely meet like-minded people who have the same passion as you do. You may even find a few more friends on your journey. I have met some of the most wonderful people being a Harley’s Hero. Don’t be afraid! You can do a little or a lot.

Do you have a favorite quote?
“If not you, who?”
“If the dogs can live in the snow I can protest in the snow”
