Why did you become a Harley’s Hero?
I learned about Harley and followed him on Facebook for months before he crossed the rainbow bridge. It was at that time that something in me clicked and I felt that Harley was guiding me. I had just finished law school, passed the bar, became a licensed attorney and I finally realized that I wanted to use my legal degree to change animal welfare laws. Following Harley’s guidance, I hesitantly booked my first ever flight and was off to Berthoud for Hops and Harley (June 2016). I didn’t know anyone and was so shy. I remember standing in a room of strangers at Harley’s Celebration of Life, while we all cried during Teddy’s speech. Even though I did not know anyone, I felt like I was surrounded by family. I looked around and knew at that moment that I was part of something big and special! Boarding that plane was the best decision I’d ever made. I became one of Harley’s Heroes because I want to make a difference, even if just for one dog. I know that together we can end puppy mills and I want to be a part of that with my fellow heroes!

What difference do you feel you are making as a Harley’s Hero?
I believe that I am making a difference by educating people about the horrors of puppy mills. I believe that educating people about this issue is so important. Before Harley, I had no idea that this was happening nationwide, much less here in Louisiana. I believe that if enough people are educated, then puppy mills will end and all animal welfare laws will be improved.

What motivates, inspires you in the fight against puppy mills?
DOGS! Harley, Teddy, Gwinnie, Harley Jr., Zoie, Mrs. Pickles, Fernando, etc. When I see their happy faces, they inspire me. I want to fight against puppy mills so that all dogs waiting to be rescued can show the world their smiling faces.

Do you have future plans as a Harley’s Hero? If so, please tell us about them.
I plan to continue to grow our team and to educate as many people as possible. I plan to attend every event possible and spread Harley’s story. I hope that one day I can be a part of the change to animal welfare laws and see the end of puppy mills.

What would you like everyone to know about puppy mills, pet stores and animal welfare laws in your state?
Louisiana recently passed legislation that restricts pet stores from selling puppies from puppy mills or non-reputable breeders.  (note: it’s not a ban, but a restriction… at start!) Basically, pet stores have to obtain dogs and cats from animal shelters, animal rescue organizations and “limited” breeders. Breeders in Louisiana must have less than 75 dogs at one time which are over the age of one and used for breeding purposes, have a USDA license which has not been suspended within the last 5 years and be free of direct violations for the three years. It is a small victory here but, lack of licensing and inspection are the issue. Not many people know that these puppy mills exist right in their back yard, which is why educating them is so important.

Tell us about your pets!
First, there is Radar! He is a blue heeler and terrier mix and is almost 10 years old. He enjoys laying around, eating treats, watching TV and chasing squirrels. He is so sweet but very set in his “old man” ways. Sky and Missy are a dachshund-schnauzer mix. They have been together since the day they were born, but they could not be more different. Sky likes chasing birds and lizards but is happy just laying around with a good chew toy. Missy is the runt. She is full of energy and begs everyone to throw her tennis ball.  She is the “baby” and lets everyone know it.

Can you offer words of advice to someone who is considering becoming a Harley’s Hero?
Do it! Harley’s Heroes have become my family! Not only are we making a difference by spreading Harley’s Dream but I have made so many new friends. Each Hero brings something special to the group. So come share your talents and ideas with us, while working for Harleys Dream!
