We are SO PROUD of Carole Matthew for being a voice for puppy mill dogs! Carole is a member of Massachusetts Coalition to End Puppy Mills and Harley’s Puppy Mill Action & Awareness Project. #HarleysDream

The following was written by Carole:

“Our town’s Animal Shelter sponsors an annual fundraiser on the town common consisting of various vendors selling pet related supplies. I set up an informational table there. I was heartened at the number of people that were eager to learn about puppy mills and that they felt the need to take action.

“I am somewhat in awe of the chain of events that took place that day and I’d like to believe the following had something to do with it. (Please take from this what you want and leave the rest, as they say.) Things just fell into place effortlessly that day!

“Anyway, for this day I borrowed from the Native American practice of ‘smudging’ the contents of my table and and all who would come in contact with it. Smudging is the burning of sacred herbs over a space, person, situation to help clear the space of negative energy and replacing it with positive, loving, calming energy; blessing it.

Newspaper article about Carole and bringing an end to puppy mills.

1)  We passed out over 100 postcards calling on our Massachusetts Governor to place a ban on the retail sales of commercially bred puppies/kittens. That’s a lot of cards!

2) The event planner for a well known local large resale clothing shop approached us. She has plans to feature a different cause at the store each month and wanted to include us.

3) I approached the table of ‘PetSense’ ( the national chain selling pet supplies) to see if I could set up the table there and the manager generously offered instead to distribute all the ‘Harley’ flyers I had to customers. That’s over 160 flyers!

4) I contacted our tri-town newspaper to see if they were interested in covering our table about Puppy Mills and the response was great. I am somewhat angry about some parts of the article as I think he was biased towards breeders but overall I’m just happy the word got out about the horrors of puppy mills.

The above information was provided by Carole Matthew.

Massachusetts Coalition to End Puppy Mills is a grassroots effort to raise awareness about the pet store – puppy mill connection and work with lawmakers for better laws to protect companion animals. Be sure to follow their Facebook page and if you’re in the area, join one of their monthly peaceful protests.

  1. FANTASTIC! This is a strong movement! each state needs to do this!!!! I do my part hear in CO!

  2. Smudging always works. I’m from the Seneca Wolf Teaching Lodge and the events that followed had everything to do with making your table a sacred place and bringing in the “good”.
    Nice job!
